Have you heard of the Fifty Shades trilogy? My friend, Angie, was the first to mention it to me. I called her one evening as she was leaving a bookstore after having no luck finding the scandalous series. She admitted to feeling a little embarrassed to be in hot pursuit of erotic books. I laughed as I imagined her standing beside the romance novel section acting as though she was really interested in the religious history books sharing the bookshelf.
A few days later, Ellen mentioned Fifty Shades saying they were the top three best selling books on Amazon. Even though I was totally interested when Angie told me about the dirty books, hearing about them on Ellen meant I could read the books in public without shame since everyone else in America is apparently obsessed. So, I headed over to Amazon and impulsively order the entire trilogy. It is very unlike me to buy books (I prefer borrowing from the library) considering I rarely read anything that isn’t a magazine or blog. But the book descriptions said things like:
“The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man…â€
“Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.â€
“When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers
Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.â€
[source]
They had me at “explores her own dark desires!â€

My books arrived today, just in time for the vacations I have planned this month. I can’t wait!
Have you heard of the Fifty Shades trilogy? Do you plan to hop on the dirty book bandwagon?

I just started reading the first book last night! I had heard about the trilogy a few months ago and put it on my list of books to read. And then my book club picked book #1 for our next book. Ha. A dirty book should make for interesting book club discussions.
That’s what my friend said!
I am just over halfway through the first book. Meh. It’s not THAT great in my opinion. Ya, it’s scandalous and more erotic than ANYTHING I’ve ever read but I don’t know if it’s intriguing enough for me to continue the trilogy. We’ll see!
Oh no—I hope I don’t get bored!
I think I am the only person in the world who didn’t like it! I was SO excited and saved it for my honeymoon because I truly felt like I wasn’t “allowed” to read something that dirty until I was married lol. Anyway, I was really annoyed with it. I mean don’t get me wrong, the sexy parts are sexy, but I was SO irritated by the main character. I just wanted to shake her and tell her to stop being such an idiot. As a therapist you might have more patience with her than I did though 🙂
I’m a few chapters in and I can see why you’re annoyed by Ana—hopefully the sex parts will keep me going!
They are quite popular in the housewife demographic! Enjoy, they are supposed to be great.
I heard the book described as explicit and knew I had to read it. I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. It isn’t like anything I’ve read before. Hah.
It’s definitely not a great “literary work” and there’s some strange word choice, but you get used to it. After the first 4 or 5 chapters it gets strangely addictive. I’ve been reading it in spurts and I already know I’ll have to read the other two books in the series to see what happens with the main character. Sometimes I’m shaking my head at Ana, but she’s very interesting to “watch”.
So far I’m intrigued. And you’re right–not a great literary work, but that’s not why I’m reading it! 😉
My sister-in-law was reading this on our trip a couple weeks ago and told me about the books. They’re on my list of things to read now. I definitely want to see what all the hype is about!
I thoroughly enjoyed all three books. I read the whole trilogy in about two weeks. It was interesting enough to keep me turning the page and each book ends with you waiting for the next. I am now left with, what to read that can follow those? I hope you enjoy them and your vacation in the mountains!
I must live under a rock. When I hear about shades of gray I’m thinking about hair color. Not my hair of course. Maybe Aunt Debbies’.
