I Drank The Fat

by Nicole on March 11, 2011

Remember that episode of Friends; the one where Ross offers to drink a cup of fat to show Rachel how sorry he is for embarrassing her? That same episode has another of my favorite Friends scenes. Anyway, “drink the fat” was my mantra last night as I got pumped up for my gallbladder cleanse grand finale.

In case you’re behind on posts, I’ve spent the past 7 days drinking loads of apple juice and lemon water, eating alkaline food such as millet and veggie juice, and trying to “cleanse” all areas of my life.

The purpose of all this prep work is to break up/soften any gallstones, making them easier for the body to “doo” away with. Winking smile On the last day of the cleanse, several ounces of oil are consumed to stimulate the gallbladder and relax the bile ducts—basically this helps the gallbladder expel whatever junk it’s unnecessarily storing.

Yesterday was my final cleanse day. It was also my first day back to work—(sad face). I wasn’t able to eat much during the day and dinner consisted of an orange and grapefruit. I thought I’d be starving and craving more food, but in actuality, I barely finished this bowl of fruit.

An hour later it was time for dessert. And by dessert I mean 3 ounces of oil. (Btw-my hair was wet from my shower. That is not the oil already having an effect.)

I have to admit I was a little anxious holding the glass of “liquid gold” to my lips. But I dug down deep and took it like a woman. Much to my amazement, I didn’t gag or throw up. I suppose all those years taking shots in college have finally paid off! Winking smile Or wrecked my gallbladder.

I didn’t toss my oily cookies, but I couldn’t suppress a yuck-face. Yuck!

Trust me—after the oil shots, this cleanse is a breeze. For the next hour I had to lie on my side and relax to allow the oil time to get where it needed to go. Isaac did this same cleanse a few weeks ago and felt like crap after drinking the oil. I waited for the misery to set it, but it never did. I went to bed and woke up with a lot of energy (placebo?).  I even made it to yoga and felt amazing which is rare for me at 6:30am. As far as gallstones go, I won’t get into the gory details, but my system is definitely purging itself. However, no visible gallstones yet. Sad smile It’s possible that I didn’t have gallstones or that they were broken up by all the apple juice, but I have to be honest, I’m gonna be disappointed if I don’t see some gallstones. For God’s sake, I drank a glass of fat!

you are brave, girl. that is the part I don’t know if I could do… although I most likely WOULD reference Friends… or Seinfeld.

NO FAT FOR (me) !!

It really wasn’t nearly as horrible as it seemed. I imagined it would be so gross and I’d me miserable. I’ve consumed worse things.

I feel like I need to do a cleanse after all the alcohol and sweets I’ve been consuming the past week, and this is inspiration for me!

I’d like to get up the guts to do a sugar detox, but I’d have to work my way up to that.

Good for you! It’s interesting to see your perspective on how the cleanse went. I can’t wait to hear a final wrap up.

Thanks! I wasn’t as disciplined as I should have been. My will power sucks. Hopefully when I do this cleanse again in the future I won’t consume a bunch of cookies. 😉

I admire everyone who is able to complete a cleanse. The fear of giving up caffeine is the one thing holding me back from ever trying one. If someone could concoct a coffee-friendly detox, I’d do it!

Well, I don’t drink caffeinated beverages anyway so that wasn’t an issue. Trying to limit my sugar intake was the hardest part. I could have been much more disciplined, but figured this is the first cleasen I’ve even done. I’ll do it again in the future and work on being better. 🙂

Was all alcohol eliminated during the cleanse as well? I am motivated to try this cleanse after reading your posts about it 🙂

It should have been, but I did drink wine. The gallbladder cleanse is not as strict as others when it comes to diet. I did try to limit sugar and soy and gluten, but didn’t eliminate anything completely. If I do this cleanse again I’ll probably implement a stricter diet too.

oh wow! i don’t know how much i’d like to drink oil. i think the idea of a gall bladder cleanse sounds amazing to me though. last time i was at the doctor i told her about some intense stomach pains i get every now and then, and she said it might be a gall bladder issue. maybe this cleanse would help!

The oil was gross but not as bad as I expected.

So fascinated by this gallstone cleanse….you have to give us a final update. After all that work, I’d want to see stones too!

Sadly I never saw any stones. 🙁 #cleansefail

Wow. I can’t believe you stomached that. Yucky! 🙂 I had my gallbladder removed a year ago and I wish I had known I had gall stones so that I could have tried something like this instead of going to the hospital for surgery. Good for you for taking care of your system!

It seems much more common for people to have gallbladders removed. I’m not sure if these types of cleanse can prevent that, but it would have been nice if you could have prevented surgery.

If you have gall stones you WILL know it. You will be in a lot of pain! You only get gall stones when your gallbladder is not working correctly if you have stones than most likely you would need your gallbladder removed.

From what I’ve learned there may not always pain associated with gallstones. If a stone gets lodged in the duct then yes, there will be pain. The way I understnad things, the gallbladder can still function with gallstones up to a certain point. It seems like the information on gallbladders differs depending on which medical perspective your talking to. With that said, I’m not a doctor and don’t know any of this for certain.
